We are very happy that you are interested in our scholarship program! Please read the following information carefully before filling in the application. It will provide you with some background information about who we are and what we offer.

We are providing financial support for studying at the University of Herat for Afghan people in Afghanistan. At first we want to present you some information about our organisation “Studies Without Borders”, then we will continue with some facts about the University of Herat and finally we will give you necessary details about how to fill in the application form and the requirements for the scholarship.

Studies Without Borders

The organisation

“Studies Without Borders” (german: “Studieren Ohne Grenzen e.V.” is a benevolent, charitable organisation run completely by students. Founded in October 2006 in Constance, Germany, it is one of several European branches of the French organisation Etudes Sans Frontières.

Our goal

Our goal consists of qualifying young people from crisis regions to make their own contribution to the reconstruction of their home country. In order to help a larger number of students, we also work on improving the quality of educational institutions in the countries our students come from. We think that especially societies affected by crises need young and motivated people in periods of reconstruction.

Students help students

One of our characteristics is our student background. Even though studying is not a requirement to become a member, we welcome committed people of all areas to join. This basis enables us to stay at eye-level with our scholars. In their studies they are confronted with the same problems as we are. Many of us are scholars at other organisations as well.

University of Herat

The scholarship is for students or applicants of the University of Herat. The University was founded in 1988 and has more than 5000 students. It has 11 faculties: Medical, Agriculture, Language and Literature, Engineering, Law, Shariya, Education, Economy, Science, Computer Science and Art faculties.

The study

The study period depends on the course you choose. Usually we only provide the financial support for the regular time of study. In case of a longer study you can reapply for an extension of one year.

The requirements

You should

Be interested in helping others and supporting the development of your country.
Have a good knowledge of English. We want to stay in contact with you via e-mail and you will have to write a report every half year (see below), which both needs to be in English.
Have a good school-leaving certificate that enables you to attend university.
Not be older than 30 years.

You must

Be in need. We will only chose applicants who cannot afford a study without financial help.
Do volunteer work 2 hours a week within your studies
Have an idea for a social project which you will put into practice after your studies (further information of the project see below)
Have an e-mail address to stay in contact with us. We also will inform you about the result of your application via e-mail. If you have a mobile phone, please declare your phone number in the application, then we can also inform you via phone. If you don't have an e-mail-address, please create one.
Live in Afghanistan.
Have internet access e. g. at an internet café.

We are especially looking forward to female applicants!

We expect from you

A report about the improvements in your study and the volunteer work every half year.
A motivated participation at your studies.
Voluntary work 2 hours a week e.g. teaching English to youth or teaching reading and writing to illiterates, helping children at school, giving lessons with the knowledge of your studies to non-students
The realisation of a social project after the studies: the project is meant to help people in your surrounding (beyond your family) to improve their living conditions by bringing in your talents and knowledge.

Social Project

The project is to be carried out after your studies
A possible project could be:

You could create a blog and inform people about the Afghan society in the whole world.
Help rebuilding your local community (renovating a local school etc.)
Organise a cultural group (drama group, choir etc.)
Creating a youth magazine
Founding an organisation to help children, youths, women, sick people or to protect nature
Start your own business (bakery, sewing company, cinema etc.)

-> but we cannot provide you with money for your social project, so think about how you can finance it

The project can be done in cooperation with a local NGO which gives you information

concerning the realisation of your ideas (the support of the NGO must not be financial).

There are no limitations to your ideas. Please keep in mind that your project is realisable for you.
The idea for the social project can be changed and improved step by step during the years of study. But we would like to read in the application form which idea you already have now.

Please note: the volunteer work and the social project can have the same goal, and the volunteer work can be used to prepare the project. But volunteer work and social project can also be two completely different things.

The scholarship includes

25$ per month for books and transportation costs to the university
The time period of application is: 19th of December 2011 – 19th of January 2012
During this time period, you should fill in and send us the application form at this website. You can send it by e-mail to: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

After the 19th of January, applications are no longer possible. There will not be made any exceptions.
If you have been chosen as a scholarship holder, you have to show your school-leaving certificate to verify the information given in the application form. Therefore you have to present yourself to a contact person of ours in Herat within two weeks after you have been informed of your acceptance. You will get further information in case of a choice. In case of false information we are obligated to disqualify you.
If you have been chosen as a scholarship holder from Studies Without Borders, you are not automatically accepted as a student at the University of Herat. You have to apply separately at the University.
We will inform all of you of the result of your application beginning the 20th of February 2012 via e-mail (or mobile phone if available).

Please pay special attention to the following points concerning your application:

One of the most important factors will be your volunteer work and your social project with which you want to help to reconstruct your home country. Therefore, the description of your social project should be pretty explicit.

The questions in the application form are necessary for a fair selection of the applicants. So please give detailed and correct answers. In case of false information we are obligated to disqualify you.

Please fill in the form completely. Only complete application forms are considered.

All personal information you give in your application are confidential and only accessible to members of the selection committee of Studies Without Borders.
